Control of Adult Mosquitos - Adulticiding
In the case of an increase in the number of mosquitoes in particular area, or detection of an arthropod-borne virus in mosquitoes, wild birds, sentinel chickens or humans, the District will conduct ground or aerial ultra low volume adulticiding (ULV) activities. At the time of adulticiding the District will post the information on the website as well as the area, at which point the resident has the option to opt out of adulticiding in front of their property.

Ground ULV adulticiding is an urban activity, and the District staff uses special equipment mounted on the truck to control adult mosquitoes. For rural areas the District performs aerial ULV adulticiding and contracts a small airplane for the controls of adult mosquitoes. The adulticides are applied at very low dosages. The low dosages, plus natural degradation by UV light and water, ensure minimal risk.

The District uses Pyrethrum based materials for ground and aerial ULV adulticiding. Pyrethrum is a botanical insecticide produced primarily from the flowers of Tanacetum cinerariaefolium, which is a species of chrysanthemum plant family. It is found mainly in tiny oil-containing glands on the surface of the seed case in the tightly packed flower head and is the plant’s own insecticide that has evolved to keep insects away. Pyrethrum is made up of six complex chemical esters known as pyrethrins that work in combination to repel and kill insects.
