Agenda Topic:  New Business

Discussion and/or approval to purchase from the lowest responsible bidder a Clark Model # TMX -15S electric forklift in an amount not to exceed $32,000.00 from Fund # 9000.1.225 – Contingency Expense. – John Schroeder, Fleet/Facilities Supervisor

Background:

The District forklift is a gasoline powered 1988 Caterpillar with a 6000 lb., capacity.  The turning radius for this unit is nine feet, making it very difficult to maneuver inside the refrigerated pesticide storage rooms.  The fumes produced by the gasoline engine also create a hazard for personnel working in those areas when moving product.

The electric forklift has a lifting capacity of 4,000 pounds and would be well suited to handle any load capacity required to move pallets of pesticide within the storage rooms.  The turning radius of the electric forklift is five feet, making it much more versatile and effective in the confined spaces of the storage areas.  Also, this unit is equipped with a side shift to make it easier to center pallets efficiently

A smaller forklift without an internal combustion engine would increase our ability to move products in tight quarters, and more importantly, it would provide a safer environment for personnel.

Staff Recommendation:

Approve the purchase of Clark electric forklift, from the lowest responsible bidder, at a cost not to exceed $35,000.00, from Fund # 9000.01.225 - Contingency Expense.

Fiscal Impact:

Current funds available from Fund #9000.01.225 – Contingency Expense are $792,900, which is 100% of the budgeted amount for this line item.  This expenditure is approximately 4% of the available balance.
