Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District

Board of Trustees Meeting

May 13, 2008

Agenda Item:  New Business

Discussion and/or approval to purchase 120 gallons of Pyrenone 25-5 and 160 gallons of BVA 13 Mineral Oil from the lowest responsible bidder in an amount not to exceed $25,000 from Fund #7800.01.500 – Control Products. – Jim Saulnier, Operations Manager

Background:

Positive mosquito pools from Mecca (3) the Oasis area (2) and the Salton Sea West Shore and North Shore areas (3) have required fogging operations to commence in early April to reduce adult abundance and reduce the potential of West Nile Virus infection.  The availability of Pyrenone 25-5 and other Pyrethrin based control products are in short supply since social unrest has been occurring in the primary supply country for the past year.  At the moment, the District’s supply of these products is adequate.  However, with this year’s WNV detection occurring so early in the year, and with it the threat of additional viral detection, the WNV season has become completely unpredictable.  We feel it necessary to take precautionary, preparation measures and feel it prudent to house an increased inventory should it be suddenly needed.

Staff Recommendation:

Approve the purchase of 120 gallons of Pyrenone 25-5 and 160 gallons of BVA-13 Mineral Oil from the lowest responsible bidder in an amount not to exceed $25,000 from Fund #7800.01.500.

Fiscal Impact:

Current funds available from Fund #7800.01.500 – Control Products are $310,882.25, which is 13% of the budgeted amount for this line item.  This expenditure is approximately 8% of the available balance.
