Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District

Board of Trustees Meeting

October 9, 2007

Agenda Item:  New Business

Discussion and/or approval to conduct aerial reconnaissance of the urban areas of the Coachella Valley for backyard green pools and water features in an amount not to exceed the entire remaining budget of $159,000.00 from Fund # 7850.1.500 (Aerial Application).

Background:

Abandoned and poorly maintained swimming pools continue to be a problem for urban mosquito breeding during the summer and early fall months in the Coachella Valley. Too often, these mosquito breeding sources are not discovered until neighbors call the District complaining about mosquitoes.  In the past, the District has taken a proactive approach to this problem and contracted aerial reconnaissance of Coachella Valley cities. The aerial reconnaissance will involve multiple grid flight patterns over each Valley city, digital photographs, and GPS coordinates of all suspect pools or water features. The contractor will provide the District with the photographs, GPS coordinates, and vicinity maps of each location on CD.

Staff Recommendation:

Approve conducting an aerial reconnaissance of urban, backyard, green pools, and water features to determine mosquito breeding sources in an amount not to exceed $159,000.00
