The District invited Ivana Dragicevic and Ana Stefanovic, students of the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, to study the District’s wetland management and applied bio-rational practices to suppress mosquito vector population and disease transmission in the Coachella Valley.  Both students are engaged at their home University in a research project titled: “Regulation of the mosquito abundance (Diptera: Culicidae) within the protected natural habitats (I and II level of protection).” The training at our District and will give the students an opportunity to better understand the mechanisms of mosquito production and health risks associated with natural and wetlands of different designs and different levels of control measures.

The work with our staff and the staff from the University of California, Davis and Riverside, with whom we have research contracts, will provide valuable insight on the importance of surveillance data and how surveillance is helping to direct control activities with the purpose of protecting human health in neighboring communities using environmentally sound and safe biocontrol programs.
